The data backs up this claim: 74% of children living with a single mother living below the official federal poverty level, as opposed to 29% of children living with two parents.

 

What about families?

However, most people think that working one job would be enough to get out of poverty. It’s not. Families have bills just like everyone else does, and living wage jobs do not always offer benefits or flexible hours that make it easy for family caregivers to work. It’s hard to stay afloat when you are unemployed or working one full-time minimum-wage job with no benefits and too few hours.

 

Health care and education don't come cheap.

This means that if you work full-time at the federal minimum wage of $7.25, your annual income will be $15,080. But that's not all. The cost of living for food and rent will set you back about $14,000 annually on average. That leaves only about $1,080 to spend on other essentials like transportation and clothing each year.

 

Where people without money turn for help.

When people without money need help, they turn to places like food banks, school meal programs, soup kitchens, and shelters. These are the services that make it possible for someone to survive when they don't have any money. They may also turn to friends and family or turn to beg or crime as means of income.
